Meet Karen McAbee, DMD

Good advice: If Dr. Karen McAbee ever tells you she’s going to do something, don’t doubt her.

In second grade, when most children her age were aspiring to be astronauts, firefighters and princesses, she told her parents she was going to be a dentist. And from that point on, she never wavered in her commitment.

“I wasn’t happy with my smile at the time, so I figured becoming a dentist could help...and let me help others, too,” said Dr. McAbee. “So that’s what I set my sights on.”

That drive and determination served her — and her patients — well. After graduating from the University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina, she opened her own practice in Greenville from the ground floor, renting a space and investing in her own equipment.

To build her practice, she did something unheard of at the time: She took out a Yellow Pages ad. While she heard about it from older, more traditional dentists in the area, it worked...and she heard from plenty of new patients, too.

A move to Edisto necessitated selling the Greenville practice, but she kept breaking new ground when she opened the island’s first dentistry practice, delighting patients who had never had such close, convenient care. After almost 20 years in Edisto, she closed her practice and donated all her equipment to a local Episcopal church for a free dental clinic.

Today, Dr. McAbee is continuing to make dental care more accessible at Heritage Dental — and bringing her unique entrepreneurial expertise to a relatively new practice. “I’m excited to help Heritage create strong connections within this community,” Dr. McAbee said. “And I’m looking forward to working with people so dedicated to patient comfort and care. There’s a personal, human touch here that shines through in every part of the patient experience.”

Along with her extensive experience, Dr. McAbee brings a holistic approach and a healthy respect for all-natural therapies — she’s also one of the few dentists in South Carolina who’s Ozone Therapy certified. And as the parent of an autistic child, she has a special understanding of how to make patients with special needs comfortable.

Outside of the office, Dr. McAbee, a lifelong Gamecocks fan, enjoys gardening, knitting and visiting the nearby beaches with her family.
